What checks help you tell whether a used drill, saw, sander, or other power tool is a good purchase? Share warning signs, quick tests, and questions buyers should ask.
I check the cord or battery terminals first, then look for cracks, missing guards, loose chucks or arbors, and signs of overheating around the vents. If possible, run it at every speed and put it under a light load; grinding noises, heavy sparking, wobble, or a burnt smell are warning signs. I also ask what it was used for, whether it has been repaired, and whether batteries and chargers are included. The price should leave room for a new battery, brushes, blade, or other wear parts.
